Underrated: Bongo Interludes

In radio, they call them car moments – the songs that are so good that you need to sit in your car and listen until the end, even if you’ve arrived at your destination.

The first time I heard Father John Misty was when he was a guest on Conan O’Brien. I was dozing off with the tv on. When I awoke, I was captivated by him, his white leisure suit, Mo Rocca on bongos, the dude from Jefferttiti’s Nile, etc., etc.. It.was.amazing.

With all the transition lately, I’ve found it hard to really connect with music the way I normally do. However, the “new” FJM track, “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All” seems to have broken the spell for me. I can’t stop listening to all 8:35 of it. The lyrics, the melody, the vibe, the laconic delivery…I can’t get enough.

When I was a radio dj who spun record to record, I loved songs like this – “Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys”, “Wavelength”, pretty much any Bob Dylan – you could eat a snack, leisurely make your way to the bathroom, and space out for a reasonable amount of time before the song would be over. It was a moment of bliss and clarity between playing the latest from Puddle of Mudd (pud of mud) and the weird dude calling and asking if you’d like to have a karate match over the phone #truestory.

This song, more than any other sonic epic from my radio days, really captures my attention for 8+ minutes to the point where I wouldn’t actually use it as an excuse to take a break from the studio. Why? I have no idea. The only thing I have to say is: The more I listen, the more I realize how amazing bongo interludes are. They just are and that’s all I got.
